Queensland Youth Cancer Service

The Queensland Youth Cancer Service is coordinated statewide to provide enhanced support to adolescent and young adults aged 15-25, their families and carers. We advocate for age-appropriate medical, nursing and psychosocial expertise and collaboration between paediatric, adult and private health services.

Our statewide multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing and psychosocial specialists is available to help you and your family through the challenges you are facing.

How do I get a referral?

The QYCS will connect young people and their family to a range of clinical services, supports and resources. We welcome referrals from GPs, cancer services, nursing and allied health staff. For direct clinical care, a written referral is required. Families of young people can contact QYCS directly.

Young people can also contact the QYCS team and a staff member will discuss your individual needs and assist you as required.

Information for health professionals

The Queensland Youth Cancer Service (QYCS) is for adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged between 15-25 years who have been diagnosed with cancer and treated in paediatric and adult hospitals across Queensland. The QYCS multidisciplinary team provides expert care to young people with cancer across Queensland. Young people with cancer have specific physical, social, educational and practical support needs which require the assistance of expertly trained professionals both during and after treatment. Our aim is to provide the best medical, nursing and psychosocial treatment and care available.

Throughout Queensland’s public and private hospitals, we aim to build capacity and knowledge of adolescent and young adult cancer care.

At QYCS we understand that a cancer diagnosis is life changing and there’s more to your life than just cancer treatment. Our team are here to support you to meet your full potential and work with you both during and after cancer treatment. We provide a free service and available via phone, email or at the partner sites listed below. If you live or are being treated outside of these hospitals, we can link up with you and/or your treatment team via telehealth facilities and provide expert input and support specific to caring for young people with cancer.

Referral instructions

We welcome referrals from:

  • Health professionals, including GPs, from the medical, nursing and allied health sectors in public and private cancer centres.
  • Non-government support organisations and educational institutions, including schools.

Young people and their families can also refer directly to our central team located at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. When this occurs, the QYCS team will request the contact details of their treating specialist and/or their GP.
