Infection Management and Prevention Service
The Infection Management and Prevention Service (IMPS) provides clinical management of infections for inpatients and outpatients, including high risk groups and populations. Consultation services are provided to the Queensland Children’s Hospital for complex, unusual or tropical infections such as bone and joint infections, brain infections, overwhelming sepsis, infections in immunocompromised patients and infections with multiple resistant organisms. Remote (telephone, telehealth, email) infectious diseases advice is also provided to all regions of Queensland and northern New South Wales. Our services include assessment, primary care and management of children with:
- complex, unusual or travel associated infections or those on long-term intravenous antibiotics, in conjunction with the Hospital In The Home (HITH) service
- congenital infections
- recurrent infections
- community needlestick injuries
- tuberculosis, malaria and HIV and other blood borne viruses.

Who can access this service?
New patients
Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 16th birthday.
Existing patients with complex care needs
Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 18th birthday (patients are usually transitioned to adult services by this time).
Catchment area
This service is available to children living in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Do I need a referral?
You will need a formal referral to access this service.
How do I get a referral?
Referrals are accepted from:
- general practitioners
- paediatricians
- hospital specialists.
Other referral information
In most cases children should be seen by a local paediatrician before being referred to the Infection Management and Prevention Service. However, this is not essential, especially for children with HIV or blood borne viruses.
Please bring a copy of your child’s immunisation history to your appointment.

Referral instructions
Children should ideally be reviewed by a local paediatrician before a referral is made to the Infection Management and Prevention Service. However, this is not essential, especially for children with HIV or blood borne viruses.
Parents should bring a copy of their child’s immunisation history to their appointment.
