Consultation Liaison Service

The Consultation Liaison (CL) Service works primarily with children and young people when they are in hospital at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital for admission. Our team works with children, young people and their families/carers to support them to make choices and learn new skills for managing their mental health difficulties that are related to their medical diagnoses. The focus of our service is on severe and complex mental health presentations. We work alongside the medical teams in the hospital to support the child or young person and their family/carer. We also work closely with other hospital allied health staff, for example occupational therapists, social workers and physiotherapists.

We recognise that the mind and body are inter-related, in that a person’s physical health impacts on their mental health and vice versa.

Who will I see?

Our multidisciplinary team may include allied health professionals (psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and speech pathologists), nursing, medical and administrative staff. You may see one or more members of the our team, depending on your needs. Each team has a team leader and psychiatrist who will oversee your care.

What does Consultation and Liaison mean?

“Consultation” includes the team working with a child or young person and their family/carer face to face for assessment and/ or treatment.

“Liaison” refers to working with the medical teams and other specialists who are providing care for the young person in hospital and also helping to arrange follow-up care for the person when they are discharged.
