Burns (Pegg Leditschke Children’s Burns Centre)

The Burns Department provides care and treatment for children and adolescents with burn injuries including scar management and reconstructive surgery. We also treat children with slow healing wounds caused by illnesses or injuries including:

  • meningococcal disease
  • necrotizing dermatitis
  • pyoderma gangrenosum
  • epidermolysis bullosa
  • friction injuries.

Consultant Clinic

Mondays and Thursdays | 8am–12pm
Wednesdays | 10am–12pm | 1pm–3pm

Telehealth Clinics

Five clinics are held each month.

Who can access this service?

New patients

Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 16th birthday.

Existing patients with complex care needs

Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 18th birthday (patients are usually transitioned to adult services by this time).

Catchment area

This service is available to children living in Queensland, northern New South Wales, and other states and territories as defined by state and national agreements.

There are also burns units located in Townsville and on the Gold Coast. These facilities provide treatment for small to medium size burns in children.

You will need a formal referral to access this service.

How do I get a referral?

Referrals are accepted from:

  • general practitioners
  • specialists.

Information for health professionals

It is essential to call the Surgical Registrar to discuss treatment options and referral to the Burns Department as well as any burns clinics.

Once you have discussed the case with the Registrar, please complete a referral form and attach any photos. When you have finished, click the submit button on the form and it will be sent directly to the Burns clinic.

Please note submitting this form without having previously contacted the Surgical Registrar, may result in a delay in the referral process.
