The Acute Response Team provides mental health triage and assessment to children and young people up to 18 years who come to the Emergency Department in acute crisis. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Acute Response Team will also refer children, young people and their families/carers to services for their ongoing care. We can also provide ongoing phone support, follow up and advice where needed.
Who can access this service?
Children and young people aged up to 18 years who attend the Queensland Children’s Hospital Emergency Department and require a mental health assessment.
This service is available to children living in the greater Brisbane catchment area.
Do I need a referral?
You do not need a formal referral to access this service.
How do I get a referral?
Patients are referred by the Queensland Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.

Information for health professionals
The Acute Response Team (ART) is an important component on the continuum of care for young people with mental health issues.
The ART works within a client-centred and family orientated model of care focused on early intervention, systemic assessment and diagnosis. The team provides support and advice on mental health concerns and facilitates access to appropriate services to meet the individual needs of the young people and their families. The ART works in partnership with primary and secondary service providers to support and enhance the mental health and well-being of young people who present in crisis to the at the Queensland Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.
Young people presenting to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital or the Prince Charles Hospital will be seen by the Acute Response Team and referred to CYMHS for follow up.
