How to do a bleach and salt bath using the Arjo bath within Queensland Children's Hospital.

Who would benefit from this?

Bleach and salt is a mild antiseptic and also has anti inflammatory properties. This would benefit those with inflammatory skin conditions, not overtly infected, causing erythema and pruritus.

What you need

  • Arjo bath,
  • protective goggles, gloves, plastic apron,
  • bleach,
  • salt,
  • plastic ruler and
  • aqueous cream cleanser.

Step one

Fill the bath to the desired level and measure the water height by holding the ruler over the plug.

Step two

Add the corresponding amount of bleach and salt as per the following.

If the water level measures 13 centimetres in height, this is approximately 100 litres of water, so add 120 ml of bleach and 3.3 cups of salt.

If the water level measures 19 centimetres, this is equivalent to 150 litres of water, so add 180 ml of bleach and five cups of salt and so on.

You should be able to find these instructions on the wards in the bathroom or medication room.

Step three

Mix the recipe into the bath. The salt will take some time to dissolve. To avoid delays, choose the desired water level and add the corresponding amount of bleach and salt while the bath is filling.
