Child Preparation for Burns Clinic Appointment

Transcript

Hi, I'm Violet and I'm going to show you what happens if you get burnt and have to go to the hospital for help.  When you come to hospital, you will be with your special person. Maybe it's your mum or your dad. Dad, or someone who looks after you.  When you arrive, you will get the lift to level 5 and go to the Burns Unit 5E.

Hello! How are you? Once you are here, say hello to the staff at the front desk so they know you were here for your appointment. I'll check you in. take your seat. You may need to wait until it's your turn. If you have your toy, you can play with it while you wait. There are lots of other things to do in the waiting room, like craft packs and a TV to watch.

The nurse will call your name when it's your turn and will take you both into the clinic rooms. Hey, Violet, we just got some medication to give you.

Your first job is to take some medicine from the nurses to help with the pain. The medicine tastes like strawberry and orange. Try and see what flavour you can taste.

After you've taken your medicine, you have to wait for it to work.  While you wait, you can play with your toys, talk to your special person,  or watch your device. Or sometimes, special entertainment like the clown doctors come for a play.  It's time to take the dressings off. Make sure you're nice and comfy.

It's important to keep your body still for this next part.  Takes it off nice and easy.  And unwrap this.  The nurses will apply a cool magic liquid to your dressing to help the dressing come off easily.

Your burn will then be cleaned by the nurse to make it better.  You can tell the nurse if you need a break.  Next, your burn will be covered with cling wrap or a towel while you wait to see the doctor. Good girl. Well done.  It might hurt a little, but don't worry, your special person is right beside you.  And you can ask the nurse for an ice block.

Your hospital team will come and look at your burn and see how your burn is healing.  It's important to keep moving like normal and a physiotherapist  is available. and occupational therapist might help you with some ways to do that.

When everyone has finished looking after your burn, you will see the nurses to come get your new clean dressings.  The nurse will put your dressing on, and use lots of sticky tape to hold it on.

Your job is to hold your body still, again, for your new dressings.

Once your new dressings are on, give your special person a hug because you were really brave today.  The nurse will talk to your special person so they know what to do to look after you at home so you get better quickly.

When you are finished, you'll be able to go home.  bye.  Well done, you did so well. I think it's time to get yourself a treat.
