Case reports

A case report in medicine, is a detailed report of the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of an individual patient. Reports may have a demographic profile of the patient, but they usually describe an unusual or new event.

Our ethics committee can review case reports. Researchers must try to get consent from the participant and/or a parent or guardian.

Case series

A case series tracks people with a known disease, such as patients who have received a similar treatment, or examines their medical records for exposure and outcome.

A small case series may not need HREC approval, but a larger case series may produce findings that are generalisable and meet the definition of research. In these cases, the clinician should consider submitting a low or negligible risk application.

Submit a case report or series for review

To submit a case report or series for review by the CHQ HREC, please submit a cover letter outlining the background and aims of the case report.

Make sure you include a copy of the information sheet and consent form listed below. This will be given to the parent or guardian and Head of Department letter of support.
