Social work

Our social workers are part of your child's specialist team. We help children and their families deal with the impact of their diagnosis, illness or injury, treatment and staying in hospital.

We can help by:

  • counselling and emotional support through times of crisis and distress
  • advice on accommodation, transport and financial support
  • planning for returning home
  • domestic violence and child safety issues
  • referring your child to community services and support groups
  • helping you access services at other hospitals
  • referral to our welfare service.

Welfare service

Our welfare workers help families and carers who are having financial difficulties or facing social barriers while their child is in hospital. We can help you find the support you need and refer you to community and financial services. We can also help you with things like getting to and from hospital and other practical parts of being in hospital.

If you live more than 50 km away, we can help you find out if you're eligible for the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS). This helps patients with travel and accommodation costs who need to use specialist medical services that aren't available in their local area.

Read more about the subsidy scheme on the Queensland Government website.
