Using an interpreter

If you'd like an interpreter, please let us know as soon as possible so we can arrange one for you.

An interpreter can go to your appointment with you or help over the phone or a video call.

They're available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and won't cost you anything.

How to ask for one

You can ask for an interpreter for any appointment. Ask a member of our staff to book one for you.

If you need an interpreter after hours or in the emergency department, look for a poster with the interpreter and Auslan symbols on it.

Our interpreters speak more than 130 languages and are certified by NAATI, the national authority for translators and interpreters in Australia.

You can find more information about certification on the NAATI website.

If a NAATI interpreter isn't available, we'll use a person who isn't certified but is recognised in the community.
