About the fellowship
Our ophthalmology fellowship is a 12 month paid program for medical professionals who want to develop their practice in paediatric eye care. The fellowship provides clinical, surgical and research experience.
Our trained ophthalmology consultants will supervise you during the fellowship with support from our orthoptist, optometrist, ophthalmic and nursing specialist teams.
Clinical duties and areas
The fellowship involves clinical care for paediatric patients including:
- operating sessions and post operative care
- inpatient consultations
- supervised outpatient clinics and designated fellow only clinics
- pre-admission clinics.
As a fellow, you’ll work with our consultants to treat and manage a range of paediatric eye health conditions and diseases including:
- cataracts
- retinal, glaucoma and cornea conditions
- low vision
- neuro-ophthalmology
- ocular genetics
- retinoblastoma
- retinopathy of prematurity
- strabismus (misaligned eyes)
- uveitis (eye inflammation).
You’ll also be able to get involved in teaching other health professionals and research projects. We encourage fellows to discuss their research with the fellowship director at the start of the fellowship. You should present at least 1 research paper during the fellowship.
Remuneration and benefits
The fellowship is a full time and fully funded position. The fellowship offers a competitive salary based on the Queensland Health award. You’ll also get:
- 5 weeks annual leave
- 1 week of conference leave

You need to be registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to apply.
Our fellowships start in August or February. You should submit your application 12 to 18 months before the fellowship starts.
If your application is successful, we’ll ask you to attend a video or in person interview.
