Children’s Health Queensland has released the artist’s impressions of a $10.8 million youth hub for Dakabin, co-designed with the community to help young people reach their full potential.

The new facility, to be built on the site of Dakabin State High School, will deliver a range of social, educational and health services in a welcoming and empowering space for students.

Children’s Health Queensland is leading the project, working in partnership with the school, the Department of Education and local health and social service providers.

Dakabin State High School students were actively involved in shaping the architectural designs, and sharing their ideas and hopes for what the facility could offer.

Children’s Health Queensland will continue to work with the school and community stakeholders to co-design the services it will offer and decide on a name for the hub.

The new facility will feature two separate but adjoining buildings for the provision of health-related services and vocational training for students, including a café and servery area for events at the school.

The new youth hub will accommodate a range of services such as a school-based youth health nurse, a visiting GP, guidance officers, psychologist, as well as visiting clinical and community service providers.

It will also include meeting and training spaces, study hubs, presentation areas, a kitchen, lounges, showers and laundry facilities for students to socialise, connect and learn more about the services available to them.

The tender process for the project opens 30 October. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024 and should be completed by the end of the year.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles:

“The Palaszczuk Government is delivering more health services closer to home.

“Co-designed with the community for the community, this youth hub will help address health and social needs of the children and young people living in the Dakabin community.

“I want to thank everyone in the community for their support and ideas in shaping what this facility will be.

“The project will create around 30 local jobs during construction and provide opportunities for local businesses and service providers to get involved.”

Quotes attributable to Children’s Health Queensland Chief Executive Frank Tracey:

“This youth hub for Dakabin will provide a welcoming space for Dakabin State High School students to meet, connect with health and social services when they need them, and access learning and training opportunities.

The students told us they wanted a space that felt like home, not a doctor’s surgery, so the building has been designed to connect to its natural surrounding and encourages social connection and community involvement.”

“By delivering the right services, at the right time, in the right place, the hub will create new opportunities for students and ensure they have support they need to reach their full potential.”
